On Day 3 the different groups came up with ways to draw people to their selfSound systems and to display their concerns about energy.

Here are some pics of the DDC students putting together their selfSound system.

On Day 1 students learned about renewable energy sources and projects that benefit from its use. They also learned how to create a basic circuit (shown below) on their breadboards that would convert the energy harnessed from the handcrank generator to the sound module (diagram below) in their selfSound system.

We recently taught a workshop with students from the Digital Day Camp (DDC) program at Eyebeam with current Eyebeam R& D Fellow Mouna Andraos, and current Eyeam Resident Artist Adam Bobbette. The task was for each team to create their own selfSound system to be used in an urban action.
The selfSound system is a portable device that uses a handcrank and gearing system to turn mechanical energy into immediate electrical energy for use in powering a hacked recording and sounding device with a small mic and speaker (more will be posted shortly on the selfSound system).
Day 1, 07.10.07 - The day started with an intro to renewable energy sources and projects in this field by various artists, and then moved into an intro to basic electronic components. We also began creating the circuit on a breadboard for the selfSound system.
Day 2, 07.11.07 - Students put together their selfSound systems and learned basic soldering to hack into the switches and power of the recording and sounding device. Day 2 also included a review of lessons learned on Day 1.
Day 3, 07.12.07 - Students worked on defining an idea for each of their boxes - what does renewable energy mean to them and how can they convey this to the public. Students tested their recording devices, and devised schemes in which the selfSound system would be displayed in an urban setting.
Day 4, 07.16.07 - Students perform the urban action of exibiting their selfSound system.
